VIDEO: Wolverine Spotted on Yellowstone Trail Camera!

The National Park Service shared a video of one of Yellowstone National Park's rarest mammals sighted on a Parks System trail cam. The video, taken last winter, shows a wolverine running through the brush on a trail cam set outside of the Mammoth Hot Springs area.

As the National Park Service reported in their post: 

"Wolverines (Gulo gulo), mid-sized carnivores in the weasel family that typically occupy high-elevation alpine and forest habitats, exist in low densities in the park and are rarely detected. Park biologists have used remote cameras to monitor the cougar population since 2014, but this technology has since become increasingly valuable for detecting and monitoring a variety of species and aspects of Yellowstone's ecology. This is the first video footage of a wolverine since remote cameras have been deployed in the park."

Indeed, from 2006 to 2009 there were only six documented wolverines sighted and documented: two females and five males.  The famously ornery critters eat some vegetation, but also insects, rodents, squirrels, beavers, eggs, and marmots.  They are rare enough that it was proposed in 2014 to list them on the threatened species act.
