VIDEO: Brave Young Woman Faces Off With Mountain Lion

Have you ever gotten close to a mountain lion?  They're beautiful, but very dangerous creatures.  They're also fairly mercurial, and tend to stay away from humans if possible.  But not this mountain lion.  When a young woman and her father got separated during a hunting trip, this mountain lion saw an opportunity to take down a bigger quarry - but the young woman is unflappable, and knows just what to do.

This incredibly tense video, filmed on November 1st in Colorado, begins with a mountain lion getting closer and closer to a young woman.  She films the mountain lion because she, as she says later, she thinks that it'll be easy to scare the mountain lion away by shouting and making herself appear larger.  But this mountain lion isn't dissuaded by the usual precautions and keeps on creeping closer and closer.

The young woman yells and makes a growling noise she later describes as being like baby Simba's roar.  But the situation deteriorates.  Next, the young woman throws her phone into the snow (you don't see that very often in these videos - in these strange times in which we live it seems that many people would rather leave a cool video behind than be as safe as possible).  Even so, though the camera is in the snow, we can still hear all the dramatic events unfolding.  That includes the low, resonant growl of the approaching mountain lion, and, finally, the crack of a rifle shot.

The young woman fired her rifle, something she didn't want to have to do.  But thank goodness she did.

Once the cat, struck by the bullet, runs away, the woman retrieves her phone and briefly summarizes what we've just missed.  Then, after another edit, we see her standing on her porch while she explains in greater detail what happened.

While it is unfortunate that a mountain lion lost its life as a result of the altercation, we are very thankful that this remarkable young lady was able to keep a cool head during the encounter.

Why didn't she just fire the gun into the air first???
Mrs EH Graham (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 07:24
She should have fired the gun in the air. Also, she should not have just injured the mountain lion. If she had to shoot, she should have shot to kill, not leave an injured animal to die slowly. I hate hunters, because they just don't care. I wonder how long it took the poor thing to die. You're evil!!

Stupid comment

You're very ignorant
Susan (not verified) , Fri, 08/13/2021 - 22:47
She did the right thing and for the ones making the comment about how she should of shot in the air or only injured it, she did what she could to save Her life. Good job and I hate to see the loss of life of any Mt lion, but it was obvious that the Cat was hungry and saw her as prey. How about the ones down on her be in her position that day. I'm sure they would have different opinions!
Hunter gal (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 13:41
You clearly don't own guns. You DO NOT shoot guns into the air. If you took hunter's safety course which is required to hunt you would know that. She could have shot the ground next to it but you never ever just randomly shoot a live round, something has to stop the Bullet eventually.

The only evil is your response by using hateful words, so I'll do the same..I hate people who don't have a clue about hunting. People who don't have a clue about hunting don't spend their money into conservation and only choose to use their words and don't realize the joke is on them.

Your an idiot

I get a big charge out of you wing nuts! This beautiful young lady could’ve lost her life.. and all you can think of is the mountain lion? Hello!!! It was about to attack her. You also clearly have no clue as to anything about hunting if that thing was 8 yards away and she hit it with a high caliber rifle in the chest…that mountain lion was dead within 100 yards believe me it didn’t suffer. I wonder how you would feel if it was your son or daughter that had to defend themselves in someway ?Unbelievable. You are evil to think the mountain lions life is worth more than hers!!
Young lady. Great story. I’m sorry you had to shoot as well. But you did the right thing… and I’m glad you are ok. I hope you and your dad have many more successful hunts.

Anonymous (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 19:36
Sometimes people act or say shit that's so stupid. Shoot in air really. Put urself in her shoes not behind a computer screen. She was taught to survive and in souronding she not the pretotor. She in the food chain. U do what u have to do and she did that. So to all u people who haven't been there save ur words for someone stupid enough to listen to u. Only strong survive she did everything right in my book. ??????
Anonymous (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 19:58
Ide love to see the way you would have handled it....oh wait you'd be dead cause your a dumbass she wasnt shooting to kill she was shooting to live
Next (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 22:47
Sure she could have, but if that didn’t work? Obviously the cat was not deterred by noises or anything else which is extremely rare unless the animal is sick or protecting food. Which is why hunter safety teaches you the basic of when you take the kill shot. She wouldn’t have had time to reload before it killed her if the noise didn’t phase him, not a risk I think you’d take standing 8 ft from it??‍♂️
Shawn Adams (not verified) , Thu, 08/12/2021 - 12:49
Why call her names? First she is a young lady and that cougar could have easily killed her. If animal is use to hearing gun shots think I maybe firing in air may not scare it off. If the shot don’t scare it off it’s a n her before she can reload and shoot again. So in my opinion she did the right thing. And opinions are like this ,everybody has one just some choose to call people names and be an asshole for no reason. Try and be a better human being.
Visitor (not verified) , Thu, 08/12/2021 - 13:25
I sure that your reaction time is faster than a mountain lions at 20 feet from you ready to pounce when you have to reload a bolt action rifle aim and hit it in a vital spot after firing once into the air.
Richie (not verified) , Fri, 08/13/2021 - 07:10
What an incredibly ridiculous thing to say!!
Julia (not verified) , Fri, 08/13/2021 - 10:23
Yes, sure, shoot in the air and HOPE that doesn't trigger the animal to leap forward and attack her before she can get a shot in.
She did the right thing, She clearly did not want to shoot the animal. She tried more than I would have to scare it off.
You'd have probably pee'd your pants and been mountain lion dinner....
Harold (not verified) , Fri, 08/13/2021 - 13:30
How many mountain lions have you faced that wanted to eat you? From your comment None!
Me (not verified) , Sat, 08/14/2021 - 09:57
Your stupid what would have happened to her if she hadn’t? You think the mountain lions is going to kill her quickly? Her adrenaline was pumping because her life was in danger she’s lucky she hit it at all
Danger829 (not verified) , Sun, 08/15/2021 - 01:17
I don’t think she was a hunter . The hunter was a lion
Robbie Robinson (not verified) , Tue, 08/17/2021 - 06:27
Ma’am, after watching the video and listening to it after she drops the phone I can honestly tell you this. One she did the right thing, she stayed clam as possible and continued to face the animal. Second she is trying to get the animal to leave, if she just wanted to shoot it she would not have just stared yelling at it. You can hear this cougars low growl, the animal is irritated for some reason. Having a similar experience my self I can tell you things happen very fast and your adrenaline is at max. At 8 ft I am not going to fire a warning shot, it’s me or the cougar. Why you may ask, because this animal is very fast it could be on me in flash and at 8 ft I would have no time to react. It is very sad that this magnificent animal had to be killed, it is not what any true hunter wants. What is good to no is this young lady will have a chance at life. Who knows you may become a doctor that finds the cure for cancer.

You are so dumb, and clearly did not watch the whole video. Hunters don’t care about wildlife?! ? You are such an idiot.

Roger A Green (not verified) , Mon, 02/22/2021 - 09:09
Probably should shouldn't have growled , yelling was probably good idea I would have shot sooner once a s warning shot
Mike shoesmith (not verified) , Tue, 08/10/2021 - 14:36
well it’s certainly a shame u two weren’t there to advise since u obviously had experience in this situation, huh?
Dan Stjohn (not verified) , Tue, 08/10/2021 - 19:41
I agree with Mike

Ed (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 13:58
I do have experience with this and a cat in the brush. I would shot sooner but not yell or growl. I would have shot the cat if it showed it self.
Chris (not verified) , Tue, 08/10/2021 - 18:58

She did good, shes alive, self survival, win for human loss for predator
Jake (not verified) , Tue, 08/10/2021 - 18:53
A shot into the air probably would have done the trick. Shame, beautiful animal. Also, to the brave girl: I think I love you?
Dustin Phillips (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 04:36
You don’t shoot guns into the air. Basic gun
Knowledge. Shoot the damn predator
Go home To your family . As for the warning shot ppl. Stop acting hard you would shot the cat too.
Lancelot Holmsworth (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 07:03
you hippies... you realize that if the lion was going to attack a person, it would do it again...so if she shot in the air and the lion got away, it was just going to be around to attack another.
Jay Dee (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 08:26
I tried the warning shot in almost identical circumstances. The cat was about 20 yrds from me and ran into some scrub brush and came right back out a few moments later. I didn't end up shooting it but if it would have started coming closer I would have had to. Just as she had to. She did her best to create distance but by coming closer the cat didn't give her a choice. She remained calm and did what she had to do. Well done!
sandy sgrillo (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 11:23
the cat was saying, "hey, YOU leave! This is MY territory, MY land, and MY property. And u r in here killing off MY food sources. You get the hell out of my land!". I wish the cat had a gun to get rid of the invading human.
Marsha Erb (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 12:35

I must be a horrible person because I would have shot the cat long before she did.

some people have no clue the devastation that predators have caused throughout the states!
scott ss (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 14:56
Note to hikers/explorers: she did a number of things wrong in this confrontation that resulted in a probably slow death to a wild animal. If you plan to venture into the wilderness, YOU are intruding on the wild animal's homes, be sure you know how to act when you encounter difficulties. This woman did some things incorrectly. she could have prevented the need to cause harm to this cat who was doing nothing that wasn't normal for them.
Joan Cooper (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 18:08
She would not have had time to reload before the cat attacked her. Those cats can jump.45 feet. She was extremely lucky and did everything to keep from killing the cat.
brent (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 18:20
perfect! good for you, this is a prime example as to why guns necessary.. technology to keep you off the bottom of the food chain.
Laura (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 20:26
Easy to come up with better salution when your not the one in the situation
Hart pounding and head scrambling trying to think of how to deal with it in the heat of the moment... That cat had its mind made up from the second it started stalking her she did what she thought she had to do and did the right thing in the end for self preservation when it came down to it.
Maby Waite till your getting run down buy a Apex predator that wants you for lunch see if your able to make all the right decisions before you start giving her advances on what you think she did wrong!
Arly (not verified) , Wed, 08/11/2021 - 21:30
I think you did an awesome job trying to prevent the situation from turning from bad to worse. You kept your composure (more then most could do) under extremely frightening circumstances. I agree that if you had just chased him off, he would have tried it again with another and it could have ended with tragedy for them, possibly a child as their territory is huge. Thanks for sharing, people need to think about the possibility of dangers occurring anywhere. And unexpected.
Bam (not verified) , Thu, 08/12/2021 - 16:18
this is stupid why is she brave again, bc she shot a damn mountain lion, like that isn’t something anybody could do, with very quick ease, white people in this world are congratulated on the simplest of things in life, whilst others have to grind hard for recognition and congratulations…
Anonymous (not verified) , Fri, 08/13/2021 - 13:13
You are one disturbed, sick human. Do your parents proud and move out and get a life, cupcake.
Marty (not verified) , Thu, 08/12/2021 - 19:20
First thing, glad you are ok. I came across a mountain lion in Oakhurst, CA. It was paralyzing and you seriously don't have time to make a plan. You can't imagine the feeling of fear. These big cats are too swift and agile. Not sure if making big cat growls is something I would do but she had to be scared. In my case, I only had an led flash light (it was night) and the flickering of the light scared the cat off. Never forget it.

The hunter gets hunted…
Doesn’t feel so great does it?
The difference, YOU have a gun.
