NEWS: There Have Been Nearly 100 Earthquakes At Yellowstone In 72 Hours

Yellowstone Entrance Sign

There were over 91 quakes registered in the past 72 hours in Yellowstone, specifically in the region just south of Yellowstone Lake.  While none of them were particularly large (the largest being around 2.9 on the Richter scale), it does represent a slightly larger than average number of earthquakes in the Yellowstone caldera, which is famous for its tempestuous seismic activity.

See the United States Geological Survey map of the earthquakes below:

The USGS has issued a Facebook post about the earthquakes, saying: "Right now at Yellowstone, scientists from the University of Utah and University of New Mexico are conducting a major seismic experiment. In late August, they deployed hundreds of small “nodal” seismometers – each about the size of a coffee can -- throughout the park. This week, a special “vibroseis” truck is in park generating synthetic earthquakes by shaking the ground with low-frequency waves. You can see these human-generated earthquakes on some of the Yellowstone permanent seismic stations!"

Even so, Montanans and, we suppose, a good amount of the Pacific-Northwest and Mountain West live in, if not perpetual fear then at least perpetual exhiliration at the idea of the Yellowstone volcano (one of the largest in the world) erupting in a fiery cataclysm.

Consequently, many Montanans keep a watchful eye on Yellowstone's seismic activity in the interest of predicting when such a moment may come.  And there are persistent claims that the Yellowstone system is overdue to erupt.  Scientists say that that these sorts of fears are unfounded, and that though they cannot predict when it will next erupt it is likely hundreds if not thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years away.

Even so, the prospect of Yellowstone turning Montana into the modern Pompeii looms large in our imagination.  Just look at this scene from the movie 2012, in which the supposed Mayan prediction of worldwide calamity is realized by, well, Yellowstone exploding like a big dumb movie special effect.

The earthquakes seen today in no way point to something like this happening.  Right?

Was putting out this video a ploy to keep people out of Montana? If so ,it works for me. The volcanic eruption is past due, from the information I have learned.

It wouldn't make any difference whether you are in Montana or Nevada if the Yellowstone Cauldren were to explode. Years ago there was a report out that the explosion would affect the entire western states of the U.S..

Thanks for letting them know. If the cauldren goes: the entire geographic landscape of the nation will be impacted.
PamB (not verified) , Mon, 09/28/2020 - 20:57
Actually it would effect the entire United States by lava and ash!!
Corey S (not verified) , Wed, 10/21/2020 - 23:15
Eventually the entire planet would be impacted, sadly, for years.

its gonna effect the entire planet sorry to disappoint

WTF is a "cauldren"? Did you mean caldera? Cauldron? What?

It is a pot witches put ingredients into to create potions.

A Caldera is formed when a volcano collapse in on itself after erupting. In the case of Yellowstone it is one if the largest in world. Caldera volcanoes are some of the most dangerous as they build up pressure to extremes and explode violently. Yellowstone will be a global killer.

We were in Cody in 2016 and the Shoshone River was boiling... that's not a good sign!!!

This movie was put out some years ago as I have it on DVD.
But in reality after being out west and actually seing area after srea, I am a firm believer that it may happen sooner than we think!

I hope it will keep them out of Wyoming, too. My brother lives there and we love our vacations to that wild and free place.

the Weather Channel movie Supervolcano was a very realistic portrayal of the eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano and its aftermath. It started with- this is a true story- it just hasnt happened yet.

Do you know where I can watch it? Can it be bought or watched online?
Celita Smith (not verified) , Sat, 09/26/2020 - 14:49
You would have to purchase the DVD.

It’s on YouTube. It’s called Yellowstone Super Volcano. It was a BBC production and I’ve watched it several times.

Has there be any disruptions on Lake Yellowstone in general

It's 2020, If it's gonna happen it will be this year. Look at the track record for all the weird stuff happening.

I have the DVD, and people laugh, but it could very well happen!

Yellowstone would not be another Pompeii. It's a supervolcano. The closest analog would be Krakatoa, which was much, much smaller. Krakatoa noise was detected all over the World, and the sound traveled three times around the Globe.

Interestingly, if Yellowstone blows, it would stop Global Warming, in its tracks. Unfortunately, at the price of the destruction of most of the USA Civilization. The cooling would last for years. Since we just crossed 2° C ( from the 1750 baseline), it would be very interesting to study the aftermath, if it didn't cause millions of dead and dying citizens.

So, is anyone concerned about them shooting low frequency waves into the area? Seems they are wanting to cause it to happen. Just my opinion.
TCJ (not verified) , Thu, 10/22/2020 - 02:25
Yes, it's concerning to me too. Why do humans have so much lust for knowledge and power that they start messing with the power of nature - even to their own possible demise and to the end of their loved ones too.

Why on earth would anyone in their right mind want to shake an earthquake prone area with deep vibrations. What might you destabilize om the surface that would allow pressure from below to find weak place to escape? Once the escape starts would it be catastrophic?
Melissa in MN (not verified) , Wed, 10/07/2020 - 21:15
My thoughts exactly!!

Well, it is Donald Trumps America in 2020. It seems like this is the year foe something like that to happen! First the plague so why not that.

I'm glad I am only 200 miles away if it happens. Death would be quick. It would be a long slow death for most of the rest of the planet.

This would sure cap of 2020 nicely. Boom there goes the west coast!

You mean boom there goes the United States. This would have a global effect.

This is would be considered an ELE wouldn’t it? extinction level event?

Lots of scaremongering as usual regarding the caldera, and the super volcano. The piece of the puzzle that most folks miss is that since the last three eruptions , the hot spots have moved. This is critical, and it is the reason the the next eruption is NOT coming any time soon ( like for thousands of years!)
